Practice made perfect.
At least that's what "they" said. That ubiquitous "they" who also declared which movies were good or bad, which fashions were hot or not, that your vegetables were good for you and that if you made that face for too long it would stay like that. Dale didn't usually agree with the "they." But in the case of practicing, she was on their side.
Dale loved to practice. She loved it because she loved soccer and practicing just meant more soccer in her day. Which was always a good thing. Plus she had been bored completely out of her skull. After finishing an eight page biology paper and three physics problem sets, she was ready for a little physical exertion.
Not wanting to waste time to go off searching for a teammate, Dale had just headed down to the quad. Soccer ball in hand, she rejoiced over the flawless weather. It was a little chilly and there was a slight breeze, but the sun was shining and there were just a few clouds... A smile came to Dale's face as she made it onto the grassy plaza. There weren't too many other students around. It being early in the evening on a Friday Dale figured they were all either getting a head start on homework, partying, getting ready for a party, or maybe even catching dinner.
Whatever it was, it was fine with Dale. She wasn't that into the party scene, unless she was surrounded by friends. Usually those things were littered with drugs and drinking and that just wasn't Dale. She got high of sports and winning and dancing and just life in general honestly. She liked certain aspects of the parties at PHA but she wasn't one to go out every single weekend and sometimes weekdays in search of one.
Regardless, Dale was out on a minimally populated quad with beautiful weather, a soccer ball, and time to kill. She stretched briefly, soccer ball between her feet. Her shoulders and back popped pleasurably, pulling a relieved sigh from her lips. She had been bent over her laptop, texts and notebooks too long. She couldn't wait to start moving...
And then she set into it. Popping the ball up easily, she went into a few simple juggles on her knees. Slowly, the tension from studying and homework drifted away. Her body got loose, more comfortable. Her mind cleared. She didn't worry about tests, grades, errors, or deadlines anymore. It was just her, the grass, the sky and her ball. She let her juggling get a little more complicated, bouncing the ball onto her head and then back to her knees, to her feet, chest, knees, head again, feet... Until everything sunk away. Like Heaven.

Friday evenings were some of the best for Megan. She had two days without school to look forward to, as well as a list of parties that she could attend. Most of her parties didn't start until much later in the evening though, so she was giving her homework a half-hearted attempt. On her desk in front of her she had a biology textbook and a mostly unfinished set of questions. All along her assignment, doodles of soccer balls and new plays that she was in the process of designing were scribbled in the margin. This wasn't unusual by any means. In fact, it would be much stranger to see an assignment of Megan's without something completely unrelated along the edges.
Trying to focus her attention back to her assignment, Megan found her eyes drifting out the window. It was really perfect weather to be outside, but she knew that if she did leave her room her homework certainly wouldn't come along. Her room was situated just above the Quad and for the most part, she could see all that was going on below. It was an excellent place to catch up on all the latest gossip and to find something to do. There was always something going on down there and it just so happened that something caught Megan's eyes, Dale. She had become increasingly closer to Dale since she had become co-captain of the soccer team and Megan quite enjoyed spending time with the girl.
Making the executive decision that it was much more important to go down to talk to Dale, Megan closed her notebooks and shoved her school work to the side. It could wait till later. Much, much later. Megan left her dorm room and made her way out to the quad, jogging most of the way. "Daaaaaale!" Megan yelled out across the quad as she came to the outer edge. It was a typical Megan to make a commotion in the middle of the quad, especially since it was a Friday afternoon and she had plenty of pent up energy.
Sprinting the last few feet to where Dale was standing, she snatched the soccer ball from out of the air when Dale hit it up. "Hey kid, what's up?" She asked, a bemused grin on her face. She knew that Dale hated it when she called her kid, but it had become an ongoing joke. Really, Megan didn't think of Dale as any younger than her, more of an equal. The two girls clicked rather well, despite their apparent differences, mainly due to the fact that they were both clinically obsessed with soccer. "Have to ask, why are you out here alone on a Friday night? Shouldn't you be getting ready for a party or a date or something exciting?"

Hearing someone wail out her name, Dale broke from the little reverie she had spun up. The soccer ball dropped to the grass, a dud, and Dale's eyes scanned the area for who had called her. Once she saw the culprit, a smirk picked up her lips. Megan Evans. Of course. The soccer team's fearless leader. Excitement fluttered in Dale's chest as the older girl approached.
Dale loved Megan. She was everything Dale like about herself and then everything Dale wished she could be added on. Not to mention, one killer center half-back. Put shortly, Dale idolized the girl and, as a result, loved spending time with her. Especially time spent with a soccer ball between the two of them. Dale could feel herself getting better just from playing along-side Megan.
Popping the soccer ball back up, Dale only had the opportunity to juggle it once off her knee before Megan snagged it. Rolling her eyes, Dale promptly took it back from her captain. "Dude. I swear. Call me 'kid' one more time. Imma sic my brothers on you." She had to fight to hide her grin though and, in the end, lost out on it. Beaming up at Megan, she shook her head and passed the ball back and forth between her heads.
At Megan's question, Dale's face scrunched up a bit. She never felt ashamed of the fact that she was not a drinker/druggie. She was usually quite proud of it. But around Megan, she felt so exceedingly inadequate in the "cool" realm. Because Megan was the epitome of cool and Dale was so not. Regardless, it wasn't as if Dale hated partying all together. She liked getting with friends. Especially if it were friends from the team...
"Just finished a killer essay and some physics work," Dale replied, rolling her shoulders out. "Had to get all this wound-up energy out, you know?" She knew Megan knew. "No dates." Dale rolled her eyes, chuckling a little. "And no parties on my radar. You know me, Megs; not one to get my crunk on." Rubbing at her eyebrow absently, she tacked on, "Why? Anything interesting going down? Particularly something where being drunk and/or high isn't a requirement but lots of dancing is?"

Megan laughed at Dale's threat. Even when the girl was trying, she was anything but fearsome. It was always a mystery to Megan how the two girls got on so well, since they were practically polar opposites. Dale was nice, she cared about people and she generally did the right thing. She rarely caused any trouble and she had ambition. Megan, on the other hand, was often a bit of a bitch. She was a hard partier and was trouble waiting to happen. Yet, somehow they seemed to just click and they made one hell of a soccer team.
"Oh please, I bet I could take on you and your brothers. I'm pretty badass," Megan joked. To be honest, Megan wasn't any more fierce than Dale was on most occasions. However, on the soccer field she was a completely different person. She was violent and she played to win. Even off the field sometimes she got into physical confrontations, although that was generally just with the players from the other soccer teams. Megan didn't exactly try to stir up trouble, but when the girls on the other team were walking around thinking they were hot shit, Megan felt it was only right to put them back in their place.
Megan rolled her eyes, of course Dale would have been studying on a Friday night. For the most part, the rest of the girls on her team were goody-goods and didn't go out on the partying scene. "Well, I think it's time I made the call, as Captain, that all my soccer girls come with me to a party tonight. It's time you guys learned to cut loose a little, have some team bonding," Megan said, a grin surfacing on her face. It was the perfect idea in Megan's mind. The girls needed to learn to get out there sometime, right? And since she would be leaving next year, it was about time.
Dale's suggestion that the party was all about dancing and not about the drinking was almost laughable for Megan. Alcohol was her one great vice, the thing that kept her tied down. She didn't mean to get started drinking and she definitely hadn't meant to become addicted, but now it was nearly impossible for her to get away from. Sometimes, very rarely, she wished she could quit, she wished that she could just give it up and be clean. However, she was too far in now and it would take a miracle to get her sober.

"Oh, all right," Dale drawled in response to Megan's comment. "Please, you just don't know about the Eckhart clan. We run rough, yo." A chuckle bubbled free as Dale's cheeks, amused by her own use of ebonics. "We'd pop a cap in yo' ass." Dale paused a moment, reconsidering that statement. Thinking it a little too far, she added the disclaimer of "Or something," a giggle trailing the end of her words. Honestly. Like she could even hurt a fly.
Dale liked to play tough but it was all an act. And she wasn't trying to fool anyone with that act. Everyone was aware of the fact that overall she was basically a sweetheart. A little sarcastic, a little focused, but just warm marshmallow on the inside. The only damage that might be done --aside from that on the soccer field or dance floor-- was if she happened to get her hands on a stuffed animal. Dale would hug the stuffing out of that mo-fo. And she would word what she was doing exactly as that: "I'm huggin' the stuffin' out of this mo-fo!" She considered the play at being hard-boiled part of her charm; especially when she broke into giggles half-way through her threats.
An eyebrow perked at Megan's decree. Partying decree. "Oh yeah?" she questioned. "Well, then I'll just have to veto that call. As co-captain, you know." A slick sort of discomfort slid into her stomach. She didn't want to see Megan get all black-out, fall-down drunk. Dale wasn't one to enjoy seeing her idols fall. And if they went out partying, that was surely what would happen.
Frowning a little, Dale tucked a strand of hair behind her hair; stalling from giving Megan a real answer. She wanted to go out and have fun with her girls, sure. And she didn't want to say no to Megan. But there was still that lurking worry about the boozing that was highly probable. Maybe she could make an entreaty to her captain; a sort of caveat.
"But, I could definitely go for some team-bonding," Dale finally replied, keeping her syntax and diction fairly normal and slow-paced --not the usual for her speech. She was planning out her words carefully, making sure she was saying exactly what she wanted to say and nothing more. "Maybe we could just keep it easy? Light?" She swallowed, rocking on the balls of her feet and spinning the soccer ball between her fingers. Then she tried a grin and it wasn't a complete failure. "Gonna need my captain looking out for me on my first time."
The grin came more genuine after that. Megan was a good friend. She was a little brash and little indulgent some times, but she was as dedicated a friend as she was a captain. And if Dale asked her to keep a look-out for her, she thought the older girl world. Or at least make a most conscient effort to do so. She hoped.

It was impossible to keep any sort of straight face when Dale was off on her attempts to be tough. It just wouldn't work, no matter how hard the girl tried. "Sorry darling, you wouldn't cut it in the hood," Megan chuckled, as if she knew what the hood was like. Megan had no idea to be honest. She'd grown up in the good part of town, never having to deal with any sort of riff-raff. It was quite evident that Megan was not at all cultured in that sense. She was actually rather sheltered when it came to real "hood life" or anything outside of an upperclass neighborhood.
At Dale's first response, Megan's grin dropped to a bit of a frown. It didn't occur to her that Dale might actually say no and she was rather disappointed. It wasn't that she was out to corrupt the girls, she just thought that they needed to have some fun and this was Megan's way of having fun. "Wait, for sure you're saying yes?" Megan asked, her eyes lighting up. Of course she would look out for her girls, they were her family. It wasn't like she would let them get too out of hand right? She would be right there with them the whole time.
Wrong. Megan wouldn't admit to it, but deep down she knew this was a bad idea. She knew that this was wrong and that, more than likely, nothing good would come of it. If anything, she would only lose the respect of her team mates if she happened to get completely wasted. Which, on most nights, was an inevitability. Yet, she had this strange hope that perhaps with Dale around, she would tone it down a bit and pull back from her habits. She didn't want to be a disappointment to Dale more than anyone. No, this whole idea was a recipe for disaster.
"Well, Dale dearest, you have nothing to worry about. Would I let anything happen to my girls? Absolutely not. We'll have a good night out and I'll expect all of you bright and early for morning practice," Megan grinned, glad that Dale had agreed to their outing. It wouldn't be too hard to convince the other girls now that Dale was on their side. She was, after all, probably the most goody two shoes of the bunch. If Dale agreed to it, than it was only a matter of time before the rest of the girls did as well. Megan nervously ran her hand through her hair, questioning for just a moment if perhaps she should just call off the idea now. However, since she wasn't one to doubt herself, she just let it go. Whatever happened would happen, right?
Watching Dale spin the soccer ball in her hands, Megan popped it out with her hands and caught it on her foot, lifting it back up to her hands. "So, what do you say we go grab the rest of the girls and tell them to get ready. We've got a party to get to," Megan said, a devious smile on her face. Having successfully stolen Dale's soccer ball, as was habit, Megan proceeded to toss it up, catching on the fall and sending it right back up. She was antsy about the whole situation and having the soccer ball to mess with made her calm down significantly. If she was to take all her girls out for their "first experience", she was sure as hell going to need calm. Which, in her case would probably mean alcohol.

Dale pursed her lips incredulously and waved a hand at Megan. "Psh, whatever. I'm a bona-fide hustler; straight-up gangsta." A grin played over her lips then. She really needed to develop some normal-people-speak. She was gonna have a conversation with someone who didn't know her one day and they were going to think she was batshit insane. Eh, she would wait until she graduated from PHA. Then she would start conditioning herself out of her wacky vernacular. As it was now, it was simply a defining character trait around campus.
Megan confirmed that Dale would go out that night and she chewed on her lower lip a moment. Oh gosh. This was only going to end badly; Dale could already tell. But... Well, you only lived once, right? And what was one crazy, possibly disastrous night in a life-time of fairly tempered ones? Excitement blossomed in Dale's stomach; a blush coming to her cheeks. Okay, so this would be fun. She would have fun. She would have fun with Megan and Skye and the other girls and it would all be good. "Yeah," she told the other girl. "Yeah, let's do this. It'll give us a chance to get to know the little froshes better." Sparing a laugh, Dale tucked the slight nervousness rising into the corner of her mind, to be forgotten about.
Dale stuck out her tongue at the mention of early morning practice. "Ew... Then you definitely can't get me completely drunk. I reckon I would not hold my alcohol well." It was more than a feeling, actually. The summer after freshman year, Dale's parents had left for a week-long vacation to New York City. They trusted her brothers to keep things running smoothly. And they did. Until the third day when they threw a massive, 48-hour-long house party. Alcohol was plentiful and, though the Eckhart boys attempted very strongly to shield their little sister, Dale ended up having more than her fair share of drinks. Then she had spent the next five hours or so, bent over a toilet bowl throwing up anything she had ever consumed ever. Needless to say, Dale hadn't felt the need to engage in alcohol consumption since then.
Dale let out a drawn-out whoop, knocking the ball out of Megan's hands and into the air. "Let's ride, Megs!" Grabbing her captain's hands, she twirled in a circle. Releasing Megan, she pealed out giddy laughter. "I gotta go change first, you know, and grab Skye." Tossing her arms over her head, she stretched indulgently, one hand grabbing the other's wrist. "D'you wanna meet us somewhere or just come up?" she asked, cocking her head in the direction of Ellis.

Megan shook her head in amusement at Dale's antics. That was easily one of Megan's favorite things about the girl. She was, well, odd to be frank. She had an infectiously bubbly personality and it was difficult not to laugh when she was around. Certainly, she never failed to improve Megan's mood and it was no secret that Megan appreciated that about her. She was rather adorable, in a dorky kind of way, but Megan loved it nevertheless and could be around Dale all day without getting sick of her. "Straight up, yo. I'll be sure to lock my doors tonight. We've got some shady characters up in here."
It was pretty clear that Dale was a bit nervous about their upcoming outing, but Megan was sure she would get over it quickly. Parties were fun, especially where Megan was concerned, so how bad could it be? She had no doubts that she and all of the girls would let go of any worries and apprehension that they might harbor by the time the reached the party. Besides, it wasn't supposed to be too crazy of a party that night, at least not by Megan's standards. Which, admittedly, were a tad bit skewed. "Sounds like a plan, lets get this going!" Megan said, trying to cheer the mood up a bit. She was definitely excited to be going to the party tonight, even if she was a little unsure about bringing Dale and the girls.
Megan gave Dale a stern look when she stuck her tongue out. It was no secret that early morning practices were not favored by much of the team, but it kept them on their toes. If they could play half-dead and tired than they could certainly play when they were wide awake and at the ready. "No worries, I'll teach you how to drink properly. Uh, not that I would know or anything," Megan quipped. She had no doubts that most everyone in school had heard about her drinking issues by now and possibly about some of her drunken antics. She didn't always get completely wasted, but when she did it was a sight to behold. She got, shall we say, rather friendly.
Grunting slightly at the loss of the soccer ball, Megan burst into a peal of laughter as Dale swung her around. "Good lord kid, I didn't realize you were going to be this excited. How about I meet you back here in say, I don't know, thirty minutes? I'm pretty much ready to go really, so I'll just hang out here until you all get here," Megan shrugged. She had made sure to change into a proper party outfit before she started her work earlier, just in case she fell asleep and had to hop up and race out the door. She was going pretty casual tonight, with a cute, flowing top and a pair of skin-tight jeans. "Whatever you want works really. I could meet you guys over at Ellis if you want and walk you over. Up to you, I'm flexible."

Feeling Megan's look on her, Dale morphed her stuck-out tongue into a full-on wacky face; crossing her eyes and stretching her mouth out. She didn't mind early morning practices, honestly. It was just expected to meet them with a general unenjoyment. But Dale was a bit of a morning person. Well, she was an all-night person. Her best hours were from ten at night until about eleven in the morning. That block in the afternoon/evening found Dale to be moody, dark-tempered and usually just a plain bitch unless something truly amazing was going on.
Besides all that, Dale had energy to spare. It might take her a few minutes to get out of bed at five in the morning but once she was up she was revving at sixty miles per hour. All sunshine and bouncing and giggles. In fact, she had recieved many a groan from her teammates for her up-beat attitude at the infamous practices.
Dale smirked at Megan's promise and then quick disclaimer. "Yeah," she drawled out. "Not like you would know anything at all about that." Everyone knew that Megan liked to party. A lot. It was just one of those things that was campus-wide knowledge: this girl's a slut, that one's a nerd, she's got a rich daddy, and Megan drank. Of course, being pretty close with Megan, Dale knew there was so, so much more to her than just all that.
Dale laughed lightly at that, twirling once. Locking her knees, she waited for the slight dizziness to die down before replying. "Hey, I'm just getting in the right mood, you know? Gotta find my party vibe." Dale would just convince herself that it would be a great night. And she was excited, very excited. She was just also aware of the high potential for disaster. But she could psych herself out. She could jump and whoop and grin and get herself in the mood for a party. Because it would be fun. Loads of fun. She would be with her girls, after all.
"Sounds good," Dale replied, easy smile spreading over her face. She scoffed a little at the time and shook her head. "Thirty minutes? Please, I'll be ready in ten." Dale was pretty low-maintenance when it came to fashion and all that. Even for a party, she could get dressed and spruced in a minimal amount of time. "But yeah, I'll meet you out here with Skye in tow." Flashing a salute to the older girl, Dale darted into Ellis and bounded to her room.
Once there, she tossed off her work-out clothes and re-dressed in something more party appropriate. Nothing too flashy and always comfortable. Tugging on her Converses, Dale moved to the bathroom and washed her face, fixed her make-up. After a quick brush run through her hair, she was done. Grinning, she bounced back out into the hall and up to Skye's room.
"Skye!" she sing-songed. Tapping out a sporadic beat on the other girl's door, Dale called her name again. "C'mon Skye. Megan's taking all us girls to a party. I figure we might as well have one crazy night in our time at PHA, right?" Dale leaned against the door jamb then, waiting.

Dale took off, hardly giving Megan a chance to reply to anything she had said. Amused by the girl, Megan just shook her head and watched her go. Megan was energetic, sure, but she certainly didn't have the hyperactive craziness that Dale did. However, it didn't really seem to bother Megan all that much, she enjoyed having Dale around since it kept things rather interesting. She could easily pep Megan up when she was having a down day, which happened more often than she'd like to admit. Dale on the other hand was perpetually happy and it worked for Megan. It was good for her.
Assuming it would be at least a few minutes before Dale came back, Skye in tow, Megan moved over to the side of the building and stretched out on one of the benches. It was her few moments of peace, a chance to think, before she took off for the night to party. She was ready to get up there and get the party started, as she and her roommates had been planning it for quite some time. It wasn't often that they threw their own party, but when they did it got to be pretty insane. They didn't have the typical keg of beer, they pretty much had a fully stocked bar. Which was why not everyone was invited to their parties, it could be rather exclusive. Of course, to them, exclusive meant everyone but the band geeks, the stoners and the good kids.
It was known throughout the school that getting into a party with Megan's room at the hub was definitely a wild, but good time. Things tended to get a little more out of hand than at the usual parties, which was the main reason Megan was a little reluctant to let Sky and Dale come. However, if they're going to get drunk and pass out it may as well be right next to her room. She didn't expect them to be too hard to handle though, they were good kids. What were the odds they'd actually be in the alcohol much anyway? She'd probably have to worry more about herself than anything to be completely honest.
A few more minutes of anxious thoughts and Megan had successfully pushed them from her mind, it was time to party. She glanced over towards the Ellis building, hoping to see the two girls on their way already, but no one of interest was passing by. She reasoned that Dale was either having trouble convincing Skye, or was taking more time than usual getting ready. Either way, it didn't matter, they'd get their eventually and then Megan could be off. There was a good chance that the party was already set up, so she didn't have to worry about that much. No, she just had to get the girls and show up with the key to the alcohol. Megan was the only one with the key to her room's hidden stash. After all, what use would a stash of alcohol be if just anyone could get to it.
