Stefan is a very handsome man. He's tall and strong without being hulk-like. He works out enough that he stays trim and fit. His hair is a sandy brown, and the length varies depending on the season. He usually keeps it medium-short so it doesn't get in his way. His eyes are an intense blue colour. Stefan likes to dress well when he's teaching, in crisp button-downs with matching ties, carefully pressed trousers, and shiny shoes. He likes to have either a blazer or a cardigan around. When he's not teaching, he wears jeans, tees, and either his battered pair of black converse or running shoes. Stefan likes to be casual when he's not teaching. In terms of allergies, he's allergic to tree nuts and soy.

WEAR A SUIT LIKE MY OLD MAN,
Stefan was born seven weeks early in London, England. It was rather inconvenient for his parents, who were in the middle of relocating to New York. Their move was delayed indefinitely because his lungs were fairly weak, and so Stefan spent the first few months of his life in an incubator. He caught some kind of virus that greatly damaged his immune system when he was four months old. His life was in considerable danger, but he was strong and pulled through. This, of course, meant another stay in the hospital. His parents were finally able to take him home when he was seven months old, once he was safely out of danger.
After this, his parents stayed in London, where his father worked. Stefan was born into a family that was connected to the British aristocracy somehow, far down the family tree. His father inherited a lot of money, not to mention made a fair bit himself. Therefore, Stefan's family was extremely well-off. However, his parents tried not to show that too much, and although Stefan was extremely privileged and attended a fancy private day school, at home his parents lived fairly simply. Sure, they dressed well and ate well, but Stefan was not a spoiled child. His parents made sure that he did things for himself and that he did not have whatever he wanted. Stefan grew up fairly happy, with plenty of friends.
When Stefan turned 10, his parents decided it was time to move to New York. By this point, Stefan was happy in England, but he was excited to go outside Britain. Once established in the heart of Manhattan, he was teased a little bit at his school for having a 'funny accent' but soon his accent weakened and he began to fit right in. After the move, when both his parents had jobs and he was attending the most expensive private day school in the city, his family started to fall apart. His parents started fighting more and more, and he picked up on the growing unease in his family. His father was away more, leaving Stefan more to his mother. However, the boy hung out more with friends and tried to escape. A few weeks before his fourteenth birthday, his mother moved to a brownstone in Brooklyn, and Stefan stayed with his father in their spacious house in Manhattan. He tried not to let it affect him, but balancing both his parents was difficult. Stefan's father never dated, though and he and Maria remained on fairly good terms. Neither one remarried.
Stefan graduated from high school and went off to university. He didn't know how or why, but he wanted to be a teacher. After four years, he graduated and got the hell out of there. After that, he worked as a substitute teacher for a year or so before he heard about Preston Heights. He quickly booked a flight down to Ontario and applied. He got the job and he became the houseparent for Tupper Hall, as well as coaching boys' soccer. And despite everything, Stefan never looked back.
HOMETOWN: London, England
MOTHER: Maria Carlisle-Hastings, 53, psychologist.
FATHER: Erik Hastings, 57, neurologist.

PETS: Chester, border collie, six months.
PACK UP ALL MY THINGS AND GET MY ASS OUT OF TOWN,
Stefan has a few different personalities: normal, teaching, and coaching. How he acts depends on his situation. Typically, he's pretty laid-back and calm. It takes a fair bit to really get him riled up. However, in the classroom, he's not afraid to take cell phones, computers, or hand out detention. Stefan has a reputation as being firm, but fun. He hates it when the kids call him sir, and prefers to go by "Mr. Hastings." On the sports field, 'Coach Stefan' is fine. He has a way of garnering respect without really trying. He is really dedicated to not just the kids he teaches and coaches, but those he lives with too.
Normally, Stefan dislikes confrontation and arguing. He prefers to not get involved in drama. Essentially, he's a gentleman. He'll hold the door for you and let you go first and all that courteous stuff. He's a little hard to get to know, but he's quite mellow once you do break the ice and get through his reserved manner. Once you know him, he has a great sense of humour and loves to wisecrack and laugh and make jokes, however lame they might be.
One problem he has is that he's too reserved around women, even the female students. He knows a few of them might have a crush on him, and keeps all of them at arm's length. Stefan is a little scared of commitment, constantly afraid of hurting someone. If he's interested, he won't make it known because he doesn't want to get rejected. Women are alien creatures to Stefan, and he rarely gets to really know them because some girls really intimidate him.
When he's coaching, Stefan is pretty competitive and works his team hard. The practices may be gruelling and intense, but the payoff is worth it. He expects his boys to work hard and to be dedicated and above all, to be the better team. He tries to teach them sportsmanship and respect as well as the skills needed for the game. On the field and off, he makes sure the boys are healthy both physically and mentally, as well as not encouraging their male egos. Some would describe Stefan as a slave-driver, but he loves every challenging minute of it. While the boys might find it torturous, Stefan keeps them excited and in shape. He is a very good coach, and he knows it. It's obvious in his enthusiasm for his sports and most importantly, for his teams.
LIKES: sports, teaching, being in charge, coaching sports, doing experiments, reading, hot chocolate, Chester, animals
DISLIKES: being called 'Stefanie' or 'Steffie', eggs, tending to sick kids, kids texting in class, people bossing him around, kids trying to get out of punishments
FEARS: being fired.
DREAMS: to marry and eventually have a kid.
